BT Group plc (trading as BT and formerly British Telecom) is a British multinational telecommunications holding company headquartered in London, England. It has operations in around 180 countries and is the largest provider of fixed-line, broadband and mobile services in the UK

The Challenge

BT faced a strategic shift in its workforce planning, reducing headcount at Adastral Park while expanding in high-population areas like Birmingham and Manchester.

This transition aimed to modernise skill sets, phasing out legacy expertise in favour of future-ready capabilities.

However, the influx of 1200+ new roles exceeded the capacity of the internal Talent Acquisition team, requiring a dedicated project team to manage hiring at scale.

The Challenge
The Solution

The Solution

To support BT’s workforce transformation, we partnered closely with business lines, HR, WFM & OD to design a scalable hiring plan that minimized disruption and optimised dual-running periods to control costs.

Our approach included:

  • Competitor mapping to understand the local talent landscape and market positioning.
  • Engagement with local talent pools, including universities and strategic partnerships, to build sustainable pipelines.
  • A focus on diversity, ensuring an inclusive hiring strategy that reflected BT’s long-term goals.
  • Employer branding initiatives to establish BT as a key employer in these new locations.

The Results

By engaging with local talent communities and creating localised value propositions, we achieved substantial success. Utilising Troi’s proactive candidate engagement team, we were able to drive external hiring (net new) to 80% within the project, versus 30% as standard across the Group.

Improving the brand visibility through a mixture of proactive sourcing, community engagement and talent attraction campaigns, our reach into diverse talent pools delivered a 10% increase in female representation across traditionally male driven environments.

Not only were Troi able to deliver to the agreed upon timeframes, candidates delivered achieved 99% probation pass rate demonstrating the quality of hire.

The Results

“Good people talk to good people. You want to be seen as a 'go-to place', especially in the tech world where everyone is always looking for the next big thing. In fact, some areas with BT, a major telco organisation, eventually reached a position where nearly all of their hiring was done through internal referrals.”
